We call these windmills, but actually they are "windpumps". They have been around since 1854, and at that time were made of wood. In the early 1900's they were made of steel, which is much more durable. These are not unique to the U.S. they are used world wide. They are a common fixture though in the grasslands of Kansas, especially where there's no access to electricity to run electric water pumps for watering cattle.

Oh my, this one reminds me of home. The image itself, and the old-fashioned photo border you put on it. I have so many memories of sifting through boxes of old pictures with that scalloped edging, asking my grandma who the people in the pictures were... :aww:
